Significance of Lord Ram breaking Lord Shiva's bow

Image
Pinaka or Shiv Dhanush was the bow of the Hindu god Shiva. Vishvakarma crafted two divine bows. He gave Sharanga to lord Vishnu and Pinaka to lord Shiva, who killed the demon Tripurasura with it. The Pinaka bow was given by Lord Parshuram to King Janak to keep it safe while he is performing penance in the forest. One day, Devi Sita in her childhood, while playing with her sisters unknowingly moved the table on which the Dhanush was kept. No one was able to move the Dhanush or the table that easily. Hence Janak decided to keep a Swayamvar and whoever lifts the Dhanush would be considered worthy of marrying her daughter. There are some tales where it was Lord Parshuram himself who suggested this to King Janak. Coming to the swayamvar, the bow was eventually broken by Lord Ram when he attempted to string the bow, thereby winning the princess's hand in marriage. It is debatable whether he did it knowingly or not. As per the Ramayan TV serials, Lord Ram later explains that even ...

The Immortal India - Book Review

Image
The book was released on 28th August 2017 and I had it in my hand the next day. That's the impact of his books on me. And even this is a non-fiction book, I cannot resist myself from ordering it on Amazon.   This book basically contains articles and speeches by Amish that were published in newspapers and journals. It also contains debates and talks that he gave in various lit festivals which he keeps on attending as he likes having interaction with readers. We met too, Amish Sir !! Perhaps you won't remember. But we did when you came here with Sanjiv Sanyal for the book launch event. It was in the last year.      Before  I start discussing the book, let's have a look at the trailer . Now, the book is divided into four parts Religion & Mythology Social Issues History Musings 1. Religion & Mythology This section is my favourite. In this section, Amish starts with Lord Shiva - The God of contradiction . Explores questions like Why p...

4 Reasons why there are few Navodayans in IITs

Image
The education level in Navodaya schools is good as compared to many private and government schools. Students mostly from rural areas are given free education from 6th to 12th class. But to crack exams like IIT-JEE you really need to be very hardworking and creative. Sometimes talent works, and yet many times patience and hard work are required to solve tough JEE problems. Sure, you hear the news about Navodaya students getting into IITs but those are students who took coaching from different centres after leaving navodaya in 11th. The % of students getting in IITs directly from navodayas is still less. These are the major factors which I think is the reason why Navodayan students are few in numbers in IITs. 1. Sources To study for competitive exams, we need sources like books, magazines, internet through which we gain knowledge. Navodaya provides NCERT books which are not sufficient. Students don’t have the necessary books required for these exams. Without these books how on ...

What was the Oath of Vayuputras?

Image
Have you read Oath of the Vayuputras? No? Then please don't read this article. There is a spoiler. And I want you to enjoy your third book.    Yes? okay. Continue. But do you know what was the oath of the Vayuputras? I think you don't. Me neither when I first completed that book. And I never actually thought about it. I mean, when you complete Amish's book you have so much else to wonder about rather than the title. First, I was very sad when I knew about Sati's death. Her death saddened me so much. She was my favourite character throughout the series. Then the end was also not something I would have imagined and it came as a shock. Or maybe I watch too many Disney movies that I am habitual to happy endings.  Oath of Vayuputras  “We will always remain faithful to your command, Lord Rudra, this is the blood oath of a Vayuputra”. This is what  Manobhu  - Vayuputra Lord , one of the Amartya Shpand, a member of the council of six wise men and...

Samichi - Sita Warrior of Mithila ( Ram Chandra Series #2)

Image
What is the relationship between  Khara and Samichi is one of the questions that pops up in your mind if you completed reading Sita - Warrior of Mithila.     I have tried to answer this question to the best of my knowledge from Amish's books as well as our Hindu mythology textures. Please read it carefully and if you have any questions, feel free to write them in the comment box. KHARA In   Sita - Warrior of Mithila , there is not much of the description of Khara. The book is about the life of  Devi Sita and it unfolds the events starting from her birth to how she got kidnapped by Raavan’s soldiers.   Mostly, we know about Khara from the initial chapters of the second book - Sita. He tortured Jatayu so that Sita would reveal herself as she was hiding behind the trees and observing all this. It was because of him, that Sita had to come out to protect his brother -Jatayuji. She did come. But Khara was very cruel. He killed Jatayu. This in...

Conspiracy at Meru Book review

Image
Shatrujeet Nath started writing Vikramaditya Veergatha 4 years ago, and his first book The guardians of Halahala came out in 2014 which became very popular in youngsters because of the thrilling mythology fiction content it had. People were eagerly waiting for his next book in the series - Conspiracy at Meru . Well, it came out in august 2016 last year but I only ordered it just a few days ago. The book came from amazon on 3 June 2017. I wanted to read it slowly so that I can enjoy it better but couldn't. I was so much excited about the happenings after the first book that before I knew the 381 pages were finished in two days. The second book is much better than the first one more exciting, suspense building in every chapter. The author weaves a tale that extensively draws storylines and characters from history, folklore as well as the Puranas. Those who are particular about compliance to historicity might have a lot of reservations about the contents of the novel....
